WordPress’s popularity is exactly why it’s such a frequent target — automated scanners are constantly probing sites for the same handful of well-known weaknesses. The reassuring part: the vast majority of successful attacks exploit basic, entirely preventable gaps, not some sophisticated zero-day. A short, consistently-applied checklist closes most of the real risk.
1. Keep everything updated — on a schedule, not “eventually”
Core, theme, and plugin updates patch known vulnerabilities. Attackers specifically target sites running outdated versions because the exploit is already public. Set a recurring monthly maintenance window rather than waiting for an update nag to become urgent.
2. Audit your plugins ruthlessly
- Every installed plugin is additional attack surface, even if it’s deactivated — delete anything not actively in use, don’t just deactivate it.
- Favor plugins with a recent update history and an active support forum over ones that haven’t been touched in two years.
- Fewer, well-maintained plugins beat a large stack of convenience add-ons every time.
3. Enforce strong authentication
Weak or reused passwords remain one of the most common entry points. Require strong passwords for every user with publishing or admin access, enable two-factor authentication for admin accounts specifically, and remove any user accounts that no longer need access — a former contractor’s dormant admin login is a real, common attack path.
Most successful WordPress breaches don’t involve anything clever. They involve a password that was reused somewhere else and leaked in an unrelated breach months earlier.
4. Limit login attempts and hide what you can
Brute-force login attempts against /wp-login.php are constant background noise on the open web. Rate-limiting login attempts, and where practical relocating or restricting access to the login page, removes a huge share of automated attack traffic without any impact on legitimate users.
5. Lock down file editing from the dashboard
By default, an administrator can edit theme and plugin files directly from the WordPress dashboard. If an attacker ever gains admin access, that feature hands them a code editor. Disabling it (DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT) removes one of the easiest paths from “compromised account” to “backdoored site.”
6. Take backups seriously — and test them
A backup you’ve never restored from isn’t a real backup. Automated daily backups stored off-server (not just on the same host) are the difference between a security incident being a minor inconvenience or a total loss of the site’s content and history.
7. Use a security plugin as a monitor, not a magic shield
A reputable security plugin adds real value for firewall rules, malware scanning, and alerting — but it’s not a substitute for the fundamentals above. Treat it as a second layer of defense and monitoring, not the entire strategy.
The mindset that actually matters
Security isn’t a one-time setup task — it’s a recurring habit. Sites that stay secure long-term are the ones where updates, user audits, and backup checks happen on a schedule, not the ones with the most plugins installed. A short monthly checklist consistently applied will outperform an expensive one-time “security audit” that’s never followed up on.
